Musicians and Agents Read This To See If We Meet Your Needs

Artists and/or agents should read this page carefully before inquiring about a gig. We try to offer an opportunity for all types of entertainers, however we lean toward the "Americana" style of music. If you haven't studied what we are about and what we are willing or capable of doing - read first. If you want clarification on what is written on this page please give us a call. Read our FAQ page too. Although we are not intractable, if you don't like what you read here we're sorry, but we know what works for us in our area. As situations and events change so do we, and they will eventually be reflected in our policies. If after reading and talking to us you still don't get it - then you need serious professional help.

Inquiries about booking must be directed to Barry Hazle at 530-472-3065. Mailing address is: The OakSong Society, P.O. Box 904, Oak Run, California, 96069-0904. Email to

  • BOOKING information please call Barry Hazle during normal business hours at 530-472-3065 Pacific Time.
  • Housing and Food: If we have the space and time (we don't always have the time, so make sure to discuss this) we will house the artist and/or band at one or more of our homes. We will feed you prior to the concert if you wish, and, if housed by us we will cook up a great breakfast (brunch, knowing most musicians) the next morning. If you don't want to avail yourself of this - please tell us ahead of time. We can provide for special dietary needs too - within reason. We can provide a list of motel/hotel rooms for the artists.
  • We understand what it's like to try and build a tour and an audience, so we try to remain as flexible as possible. But, we still have a schedule to publish and an audience to gather to hear you play, so work with us on timing.
  • Artist Mercantile: We don't have a surcharge on artist product, nor do we share any profits from the sale of food and beverages with the artist.  All of that goes to improving our production capabilities. We will provide you with a table and chair to show and sell your merchandise. If needed we can provide someone to assist you in sales, but we need to know in advance. There is no charge for this service, but it would be nice if you kicked down with a CD or something to the person helping you.
  • Promotional packages - call before you mail: If we already know your music and have it on hand - just call and see what's up. If we don't know your stuff feel free to email or call prior to sending promotional material.
  • Keep In Touch: Please call, email or read this site periodically and see what we're doing. Despite the warning in the first paragraph, we don't bite - we encourage the artist or their representative to call. We just want you to understand who we are and what we are doing for performers in Northern California.
  • Season and Booking Timeframe: Our outdoor performance season is late spring through late fall. Our booking for the coming outdoor season starts in November of the preceding year. For example, in November 2006 we will start booking the 2007 outdoor season. Our goal is to have the outdoor concerts booked by late March. This allows us to advertise a complete season of concerts, which creates more entertainment media attention. Generally, we will not book any concerts around the holiday season, mid-November through mid-January. And, two weeks on either side of Memorial Day & Labor Day because we are all Strawberry Music Festival staff. Father's Day makes it a little difficult because we're volunteers at CBA's Grass Valley Festival.
  • Outdoor Concert Site: Our outdoor concerts are held at Gray Pine Farm in Oak Run, California. We have a raised 20x20 covered wooden stage with lighting and grassy seating area in the middle of a treed garden nursery. We have a large picnic and BBQ area and serve a full BBQ meal before the outdoor concerts. The menu varies, but usually has two main courses from which one can choose, such as chicken, pork ribs, tri-tip beef and, many times, BBQ salmon. Occasionally we stage shows in Shingletown at Upcountry Gardens which has a similar outdoor setting as Gary Pine Farm.
  • Capacity and Ticket Pricing: We have limited our outdoor concert capacity to 350 paid tickets. Our ticket price has between $15 - 22, based on the act. Because we believe that families need to have affordable quality entertainment, and that children must be taught to appreciate music, we do not charge admission for kids 16 years old and under. That doesn't hold true for our indoor concerts because of limited seating, unless the child can sit on someone's lap.
  • Most Indoor gigs are held at Bernie's Guitar in Redding. They are usually booked 4 to 6 months in advance - sometimes even further out, so the sooner you inquire the better. The capacity at Bernie's is about 105 paid. It is a wonderfully warm room which has made for great concerts.
  • SOUND: Our sound capability has limitations, so if your act has specific sound reinforcement requirements they must be discussed as a part of the booking process. When you are sending promotional material include your stage plot and sound requirements. Be sure to differentiate between what are the minimums and what would be nice to have. We are always striving to improve our sound reinforcement ability by investing the income from concerts back into production equipment, so you never know - we may have the Taj Mahal. If you are booked we will have our sound folks contact you way ahead of the concert so we can have a seamless setup and sound check.

  • Days Of Concerts: We can book gigs occasionally on weekdays, however our biggest returns have been on Saturdays. We have had bad experiences with Sunday through Wednesday. In the summer months the City of Anderson has the "Mosquito Serenade," which is a free concert at their river park, on Wednesdays. The City of Redding has their free concert, "MarketFest," on Thursdays,  There are times when we think we can still go head-to-head with "MarketFest", but not always.
  • Travel: We are four hours from the San Francisco Bay area; three hours from Sacramento, CA; four hours from Reno, NV.; three-to-four hours from Medford, OR;  90 miles from Chico.
  • Radio and Entertainment Media: We have a very close relationship with KCHO/KFPR Northstate Public Radio,  the NPR stations for far Northern California. We are hosts for The Good Old Fashioned Folk Music Show, Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm. You should check with your record company to make sure they are serviced with your releases. You should direct your recorded material and press releases to KCHO/KFPR, 603 N. Market, Redding, CA 96003.
  • You should also send CD's and bios to Jefferson Public Radio, Eric Alan, Music Director, Jefferson Public Radio, Southern Oregon University, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. Ashland, OR 97520. They have folk and world music shows that play well in our area.
  • In the Chico area: KZFR, POB 3173, Chico, CA 95927 - independent public radio
  • In Oroville area there is a great low-power independent radio station KRBS-LP 107.1 FM
    PO Box 9 - Oroville, CA 95965.
  • We handle most of our own publicity for our contracted gigs, but will always take any help that's available, such as publicists. We will provide a written list of all of our media contacts upon request.

Lastly, as an artist or agent you know our tiny organization can't produce everyone. And, we may not meet your needs as a concert organization.

But, thank you for your interest.

Barry
